Holding hands with a Honu
Okay… Not really since it’s a state and federal offense to harass the endangered Green Sea Turtle but we were close enough to one to feel like we were. I actually have one photograph of a friend where it looks like she’s actually holding hands with a Honu.
Back in March, my good friend Karen decided to run the Maui marathon. Aside from running 26.2 miles, she also wanted to see some turtles. So we booked a snorkeling tour with Trilogy Excursions. I kinda felt like they were a bit on the expensive side but they take you to two snorkeling spots and feed you pretty well. I also got the kama’aina rate so it ended up being a very good deal. Their staff is very professional and make sure all your needs are taken care of.
Here’s the sailboat they took us in. It seats about 40-50 people.
This guy swam next to us for like 5 minutes. I probably took a hundred pics of him….
So you may be wondering how I know this Honu is a male. According to my coworker Traci, by looking at the size of tail, one can easily determine the sex of the sea creature. Apparently, males have larger tails which they use to hold onto females while mating.
Eventually he got some air then went on his merry way… Probably trying to find Nemo. Hmmm gotta remember to wipe down the lens port…
I think we saw about 6-7 other turtles so here are some of the more memorable shots…
Some bubbles even formed on the camera lens port while it was submerged… Grrrrrr….
Thanks for watching and we now return you to your regularly scheduled program…

Regardless of the difficulties with the dreaded air bubbles which plague all our lives, awesome pics!
Awesome pictures Alan!!!! I love the one of the Honu and Karen coming to the surface! And the water by the boat is gorgeous!

Awesome shots. I thought the dive site would be way offshore, but it was pretty close to land.
Hi Alan! Cool pics! Very impressive.

Wow! Great picture of the boat. The water color is just amazing. What lens did you use? I need to get me some of that.
The catamaran shot is gorgeous..the texture on the water is almost too perfect..how much was this whole package?? I wanna go!
Love the shots as always! I’d love to go on one of those tours, but I don’t think I’d be able to afford it without the kama’aina rate! I might have to stick to snorkeling elsewhere!
Btw, is Karen the same girl we ran into while surfing with you back in February? Might see you again this February!
yo dass sum tite ass kuurazy shit son !
Dawn said, she’s use to turtle heads trying to go into the water. That’s the first time she’s actually seen a turtle head poke out of the water.
So Alan….how big is your tail?
hahahahahahahahaha
You know I had to come up with something of the sort. It just wouldn’t be me if I didn’t.
Cool pictures.
I want to see pictures of your ceramic arts, please.
